Pirgos (Pyrgos)

Pirgos (Pyrgos) Having been the island’s capital under the Turkish rule, Pirgos has managed to maintain its medieval flair. Its centre is the Kasteli district, which has grown around the castle complex. Well worth seeing are the churches. Theotokaki is the island’s oldest church, built in the 10th century and has a wonderful ikon wand, carved in wood. The wall paintings from the 14th century are hardly recognizable. From Pirgos, the road goes on to Profitis Ilias, and there is also a hiking way to Perissa.
